Grunley to Expand Education Center and Construct a New Auditorium at Fort Detrick
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Baltimore District has awarded Grunley and its joint venture partner a $7.5 million contract to expand Fort Detrick’s education center by 18,000 square feet and construct a new 10,000 square feet community auditorium within Building 1520. Two buildings will also be demolished and site restoration performed. The project will seek LEED® certification. BurtHill is the Architect of Record.
The education center will receive a new building entrance with aluminum curtain wall system, a vegetated membrane roof, and a new second floor with associated elevator and staircase. New space will be created for classrooms, offices, and conference rooms and a connector link will join the center to the adjacent existing library. The auditorium will seat 350 patrons, and include theater lighting, and new audio-visual and communication systems. New energy-efficient mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems will be installed throughout.
